How to choose the right Engineering College

Choosing the right engineering college can be a daunting task. Students who wish to pursue a career in engineering are constantly bothered by the notion that engineering is a tough subject. Caught between their ambitions and the constant fear of not making the eligibility cut into engineering colleges, they forget to analyze the merit of the college they join. An engineering college has a major role to play in molding a student and honing his/her skills and knowledge. Thus, it is essential that students pay close attention when choosing colleges to pursue engineering.

Various factors students must keep in mind when choosing an engineering college:
The Infrastructure: Among the most important factors while opting for an engineering college is its infrastructure. Make sure that the equipments in the laboratories are sufficient. They must be up to date and the number of equipments must be adequate for the number of students in the class.

Faculty: Any engineering college relies on its faculty for producing successful students. The infrastructure can be used productively only with faculty members who are experienced and are always updating themselves with the changes taking place in the engineering field.

Facilities: Imperative features of a good engineering college include a well stocked library with up-to-date books and journals, uninterrupted internet access, hostels, student clubs, etc.
Placements: A guaranteed placement engineering college can be assessed for its merits by the number of activities/ programmes it conducts. These could include job fairs, tie-ups with industries, memorandum of understanding (MoU) with companies, skill development courses etc. See to it that the college has a dedicated placement and career development cell.
Having gone through all the criteria, choose the ones that strike you most and give you the belief that they will truly help you attain your goals. Once you narrow down your list of colleges, visit them. Go to the college, talk to the students and professors. Get a good feel of the college and see if it is the place for you.

Graduate Engineering Employability Programme

The Graduate Engineering Employability Programme endeavors to equip students with the necessary proficiency, aptitude and soft skills in order to produce graduates who are industry ready. Currently in India, over 55 lakh engineers graduate annually. Of these graduates, only 35 thousand are immediately employable. Though students put in great effort and perform well in there academics, when they graduate they find themselves struggling to get placed. Recognizing where the problem lies and initiating measures to overcome these problems are vital. Alpha College of Engineering has done exactly that.

As graduates leave college and go for interviews, they lack certain qualities that recruiters look for. It is expected that over the next 10 years India will contribute to more than 25% of working age population on a global scale. Though there is so much scope, students struggle to get placed because they lack in the parameters which a potential employer looks for.

The key parameters recruiters look for:
  • Academic performance and record
  • Aptitude (general and technical)
  • People skills (Soft skills)
  • Specialization

At Alpha, GEEP is on a mission to bridge this gap between the demands of the industry and the surplus supply of students, by offering value added training programmes. These programmes are taught along with the regular degree course.

The Graduate Engineering Employability Programme caters to all engineering students regardless of the branches of engineering. These skill development courses are structured to specifically cater to the requirements of various industries. Since these requirements are constantly changing, the content of the courses are updated on a regular basis by industry experts.

What makes GEEP different?
  • Students are trained by industry experts
  •  Training in line with industry requirements and expectations
  •  The syllabus is constantly updated with the changes in the current trends and industry   requirements
  •  Employment oriented
  •  Hard skills and soft skills are taught simultaneously
Job Placement Assistance

Job placement assistance is offered to all students. Based on the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation method (CCE method) students are assessed to see if they have gained adequate knowledge after the completion of each module. This is to ensure that every applicant from Alpha is job ready.

Moreover, the tie-ups the college has with other companies provide students with a wide choice and a better chance of being recruited.

Children – Our Future

Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.
                                                                                                                                                        - John F. Kennedy

The 14th of November is celebrated as Children’s Day all over India. It happens to be the birthday of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru , the first Indian Prime Minister. He was very fond of children and children loved him too. As a sign of affection, children call him Chacha Nehru (Uncle Nehru). The day emphasises the significance of showing love and affection to children and protecting them.

Educational institutes mark the occasion by conducting events and programmes that showcase the talents of students and emphasise the importance of children for the bright future of India. As a gesture of affection towards children, teachers take to the stage and perform for the students.

Children’s day reminds the adult world that children are the future and a day to renew our commitment and duty towards the wellbeing of the children. In the same breath, it must be added that the occasion calls on the adults to be inspired by the qualities of children - to live peacefully, forgivingly and truthfully.

The success of the nation lies on the shoulders of the younger generation. Therefore it is essential to inculcate integrity, loyalty, hard work, discipline and a great sense of humanity in them. Children who have a strong foundation of knowledge, skills and a positive outlook towards life are the key to a brighter, stronger and united India.

On this day, Alpha Porur School reiterates and stresses on the rights of children and it is crucial that adults do their best to follow and protect it:

Children have the right to:

  • be looked after by parents and family
  • have healthy food
  • good education
  • live with dignity
  • be protected from all sorts of violence
  • freedom of expression
  • freedom of information
  • learn and play
  • all forms of development –emotional, mental and physical

“There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their safety and rights are respected, that their welfare is respected, that their lives are free from fear and that they grow in peace.
                                                                                                                                                            -   Kofi Annan

The placement record and skill developmentcourses that an engineering college offers are the prominent features that make it renowned and sought after by budding engineers. The major courses offered by an engineering college are important, however even more important are the pedagogies followed in imparting knowledge to the students. Placement of students has two aspects to it. The first phase of placement is the placement itself. The second phase concerns the recruiters. It is not sufficient to get the students placed in reputed companies. Rather, true success comes when the companies are happy to have recruited students from our institution and our students are proving themselves as capable engineers.

In this effort, the Alpha College of Engineering has been running the Career Development Cell. It keeps the students engaged right from the beginning of the academic year with various training programmes by the in-house faculty and corporate trainers from companies such as Ethnus and Futurenet.

Keeping in mind the importance of communication skills - which includes verbal and non-verbal communication, the students are trained to be effective, efficient communicators who can express themselves with clarity and coherence. A significant change has been observed among the students after undergoing these training programmes in terms of increase in confidence and personality development.

Apart from conducting these programmes the CDC organises Mega Job Fairs that attract participants who number in the thousands. A major part of them get placed in career paths that they desire.

The students of Alpha have been placed in esteemed companies such as CTS, Infosys, HP, CSS Corp, Accord Technocare Pvt. Ltd., IBM, TCS, Symantec Sutherland Global Services, Mphasis, Arobot, Enchanter Corporation, HCL Talent Care, Promantis Inc., S10 Health Care Pvt. Ltd., Bharathi Airtel, Futurenet and AGS Health.
