Jet Toy and Skimmer challenge -Mahindra Research Valley | Alpha International School | Sembakkam Chennai

On 27.10.2018, SAE (AWIM) had organized Regional level Jet Toy and Skimmer challenge in Mahindra Research Valley. A group of 4 students from Grade V took part in the skimmer and 2 groups of students from Grade 6 took part in Jet Toy. Grade 5 students won the overall shield and going to take part in National level challenge, in Chitkar University, Chandigarh on 22nd & 23rd December. AWIM, “A World In Motion” program is a teacher-administered, industry volunteer-assisted program designed mainly to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to life for students in the age range of 9 to 15 years. The students are provided with a Kit containing raw materials to build Toys, such as Skimmer, Jet Toy, Straw Rocket etc. The Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) International provides the curriculum, while SAEINDIA has been implementing this program in schools across the country. The future of the automotive industry in India will ultimately depend on its young engineers who need to display a firm grasp on scientific and engineering

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to have a two-term structure with the syllabus split to ensure that all subjects and topics are delivered in the right chronological order.

Assessments

While the major objective of the assessment is to measure progress and achievement of learners that reflect the effectiveness of the classroom transaction, it also serves as a feedback mechanism for the learner. The assessment pattern helps highlight areas where performance can be improved, in concurrence with the concept of holistic development of the learner.
At Alpha, the methods of assessment differ based on the choice of board and the learner’s grade.
Kindergarten follows a non-formal, continuous and comprehensive assessment pattern based on the worksheet system.
The Primary level (Grade I to V) has a series of Formative Assessments (FA) aimed at measuring progress and achievements of students through practical assessing activities, subject-specific skills. Pen and paper assessments spread over the academic year are conducted informally for the understanding of learning levels achieved. The skill gaps are observed and the necessary remediation is undertaken. The Summative Assessment (SA) is a formal written test, which is conducted at the end of each term. The student is graded based on the sum total of FA and SA conducted over the two terms.
The Cambridge Primary Progression tests and Checkpoint examinations are standardized assessments that provide clear insight into learners’ strengths and areas of improvement.
At the end of Grade V, the students appear for the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint exam.

Orientation Program - Save for Future | Events at Alpha Arts and Science Chennai



Department of Mathematics, shift II conducted an orientation program on “Save for the future”. Mr.S.D Shyam Sundar. Public relations Inspector Mylapore Post office gave a speech on the need to save and why the students should start saving at their age. He also told them that they can pursue their higher studies or become young entrepreneurs if they have enough money to invest. They briefed them with the available schemes and facilities. Girl’s special scheme SSA was explained. Monthly pension scheme, PPF for boys, Indian post payment bank. basic saving plan @ 4% interest etc was explained. Third-year students, Part-time workers, and interested students and staff were the audiences. The students showed interest and were eager to know when they would come back for opening the accounts. Online banking which was missing in the post office is introduced recently and a trial run is done. Students can use this facility in a short while. We made the students understand, Money does not dictate their lifestyle. But what they do to get it and how they manage their finances is that which determines their lifestyle.

The Department of Visual Communication organized a seminar on ‘Political Reporting & Journalist Skills’ for 1st, 2nd & 3rd-year students on 5th Dec 2018. Resource person Mr.Gunasekaran, Senior Editor, News 18 Channel, Tamil Nadu. He started his career in Print Media and worked in Dinamani, Times of India, The Hindu, and Deccan Chronicle, later moved to Electronic media –Puthiya Thalaimurai & News 18 Channel. The session started with an interaction with the students and raise questions to the floor like How many of them are interested in Journalism. What is a nose for NEWS? He talks about types of Media, the significance of each media, Political Icons interviewing techniques, Preparation for News hour debate shows, handling the crisis in the execution of programs in TV channels especially in political issues and quoted the number of political situations as examples. Job satisfaction and opportunities in the field of Journalism, Motivated students to take up reading and writing practice every single day to improve their language skills.

INTEGRA CLUB - Maths Shift I Club Inauguration | Alpha Arts and Science College | Chennai


The inauguration of the Integra club for the academic session 2018-2019 was held on 20th July 2018. The ceremony started with an invocation to God Almighty. It was followed by welcome address by Mrs. T. Roseline. The felicitation address was given by the principal Dr. D. Ashalatha. Chief guest Dr. T. Johnson Head, Department of Mathematics, Dr. M.G. R. Educational & Research University was cordially invited to lit the candle. He encouraged the students to participate in all the activities of the Integra club. The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. J. Jannet Raji.

Guest Lecture on Number System | Alpha Arts and Science College | Chennai

                                  
The Department of Mathematics had organized a Guest lecture on the 20th of July 2018. The chief guest, Dr. T. Johnson, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. M.G. R. Educational & Research University was invited to deliver a lecture on a number system. Sir elucidated on the topics of number theory giving illustrations with examples of real-life situations. He explained the concept of division by zero and the concept of infinity and its existence, developing from natural numbers and then extending his discussion on rationals and irrationals through light on complex and imaginary numbers and their relationship with trigonometric functions. The talk was highly appreciated by the students. Students from various disciplines attended and had benefitted from his lecture.

On Oct 30th, Alpha Arts and Science College celebrated its 19th Graduation Day, with yet another feather in its cap – the victory of registering 181 university ranks for the 2014-17 batch. The Chief Guest- Shri Vasa Seshagiri Rao, IRS, Principal Additional Director General, National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics, Chennai and the Guest of Honour - Mrs. Rehana Ameer, Member of the Court of Common Council, London, United Kingdom, applauded the young graduates and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. The program commenced with the formal academic procession. Dr. D. Ashalatha, Principal of Alpha Arts and Science College – delivered the welcome address, Dr. Mrs. Grace George, Founder, and Chairperson, Alpha Group of Institutions - declared the Graduation Day Open, Ms. Suja George, Vice Chairperson, Alpha Group of Institutions - administered the pledge. The Chief Guest distributed awards and prizes to the special Awardees and University Rank Holders. The 3 prestigious awards instituted by the College: 1. The Kannama Jeya Memorial Award for the best outgoing student was awarded to Saurav Bikash Patra, Department of Biotechnology, Shift I and Aravind .C, Department of Business Administration, Shift II. 2. The N. George Memorial Award for Alpha Boy was presented to Muhammed Baaquier, Department of Commerce, Shift I and Gokulnath. V, Department of Commerce, Shift II. 3. The Annamma Mullakkal Memorial Award for Alpha Girl was presented to K. Akshaya, Department of Computer Applications Shift I and S. Arockia Stella Mary, Department of ISM, Shift II.


7th Graduation Day | Alpha college of engineering | Chennai


Alpha College of Engineering, Chennai, celebrated its 7th“GRADUATION DAY” for the 2012-16 Batch UG and PG students on 2nd September 2017. Dr.J. Kumar, Director, Planning and Development, Anna University was the Chief Guest for the program. The program was presided over by Seva Ratna Dr. Mrs. Grace George, Chairperson, Alpha Group of Institutions and Mrs. Suja George, Vice Chairperson, Alpha Group of Institutions. All the UG (BME / CSE / ECE / IT/ MECH and PG (MBA / ME –CSE) students have participated in the program and received their degree certificates from the Chief Guest and Principal, ACE.
